Some people would say that the 4×4 is the perfect car for any off-road adventure. However, not all 4x4s are created equally. There is a lot to consider when choosing a 4×4 and knowing how to handle it, but the most important thing to consider are the approach angle, departure angle, and breakover angle. If a vehicle is not set up for these angles, there can be poor clearance and difficulty with getting over or off obstacles.
Good approach-, departure- and breakover angles will help the driver to maintain control and confidence when driving and prevent damage to the underbody and suspension parts. The article will cover all angles for the most popular 4×4 vehicles. Even though we researched these angles thoroughly, always drive sensibly, and if you aren’t comfortable with driving at certain angles then don’t do it :).
What are these angles?
Let’s start with the angle of approach. The angle of approach is the maximum angle of a ramp onto which a vehicle can be crawled up, without its bumper scraping along it. The departure angle, on the contrary, is the maximum angle a vehicle can descend without the tail bumper dragging on the ground. The angle between the middle of your car’s underside and the tires is the breakover angle. Knowledge about your breakover angle is necessary for you to drive over an object without the four tires coming off the ground and losing traction. You get the point by know… knowing these angles of your car help you in getting over, or through, the obstacles in front of you.
How to check your angles
It is always recommended to keep an eye on your angles when offroading. There are many great mobile apps that are developed for only this purpose. We are however very keen on more analog systems. Roll-over angle
Besides the approach-, departure- and breakover angle there is also something called the roll-over angle. This is also called the traverse angle. It’s the angle on which the car will tip over on its side. This angle isn’t a constant factor.
